Um truque de magia

«(...)Talvez nunca como em "Western Stars" Bruce Springsteen tenha levado tão longe essa tensão entre " artifício" e "autenticidade", entre "a dor que finge tão completamente" e "a dor que deveras sente". " Born to run"(1975), " Darknesson the edge  of Town (1978), " The River" ( 1980) , "Nebraska" (1982), "The Ghost of Tom Joad" ( 1995), " Devils & Dust" (2005) foram , sem dúvida , momentos de exaltação dos derradeiros escombros  do " sonho americano" - tal como ele se foi transformando ao longo das 7 décadas de vida de Springsteen - mais epicamente cinematográficos ou num resguardado registo "de câmara , mas todos em reconhecida sintonia musical com aquilo que "naturalmente"  seria o idioma aceite. Em "Western Stars ", porém,  tudo muda. Se Bruce , tal como afirmou a Martin Scorsese, deseja "continuar a celebrar e a honrar a beleza e a poesia do meu país", acima de tudo, não abdica de " continuar a ser um storyteller - foi essa a promessa que, quando jovem, fiz a mim mesmo. Levava o meu divertimento muito a sério. Continuo a acreditar ser esse o serviço que devo prestar: esta minha oração longa e ruidosa. O meu truque de magia".

E, desta vez, o " truque de magia" foi deliberadamente artificioso: ir respigar as memórias daquela música que escutava enquanto adolescente - Glen Campbell, Jimmy Web, Burt Bacharach, Dion and the Belmonts, Harry Nilsson - e, em torno delas, sem verdadeiramente cair  na armadilha do exercício de estilo, edificar um álbum magnífico mas que se assemelha muito pouco a um disco de " Bruce Springsteen". Sim, os protagonistas  de cada canção continuam a ser encontrados nas trevas à porta das cidades - o actor secundário que " once was shot by John Wayne, that one  scene's bought me a thousand drinks";  o duplo que recorda  a actriz  que conheceu " on  the set  of this  B picture  she made , she liked her guys a little greasy and " neath her pay grade ", e exibe  " two pins in my ankle and a busted collarbone, a steel rod in  my leg, but it walks me home"; o fulano que murmura " You fall in love with lonely, you end up that way" - mas , agora,  emoldurados  por sumptuosas orquestrações, como se Aaron Copland, Max Steiner ou Alfred Newman, ferreamente disciplinados por Phil Spector  ( exemplo máximo: there goes My Miracle") , tivessem ressuscitado em glória.»
